The union says no teaching, examination or attendance of any kind would hold during the strike.
The Academic Staff Union of University has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike.
The Union's National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi announced the commencement of the industrial action on Monday, 14, 2017 during a meeting of the National Executive Council of ASUU in Abuja.
Channels TV reports that Ogunyemi Ogunyemi declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite nationwide strike following a nationwide consultation with members at an emergency NEC meeting held on Saturday, August 12, 2017.
Ogunyemi reportedly said there shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union’s branches across the country.
He also explained in a statement issued on Saturday, August 12, that their decision to embark on a nationwide strike was prompted by the failure of the government to fully implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) adding that the demand of the union has not been addressed since then.
The last time ASUU embarked on an industrial action was 2013. The strike lasted for five months and was called off on Monday, December 16, 2013.
