Oyeleye Lateefah Abiola: Osun State scholarship student is Ukraine's best graduating student

She out did 563 other people to become best graduating student.

Oyeleke Lateefah Abiola has just emerged as the best graduating student from the National University of Ukraine, class of 2017.

Lateefah Abiola is one of the eighty-seven students sponsored by the Osun State Government to study Medicine in Ukraine. She passed with an incredible 95.6% grade.

In a class of 564 students, Lateefah came out tops. And for that, we're immensely proud. But most proud currently, is most likely the Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.

How this journey began

Lateefah was one of 98 students who gained admission to study Medicine at the Osun State University. But their dreams were quickly put on hold when the National Universities Commission (NUC) withdrew accreditation for the course; the school had no teaching hospital.

According to a statement by the Director of the Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, signed by its Director, Semiu Okanlawon, this was deeply worrying.

He said:

“This was a source of concern to the Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. This unfortunate development compelled the governor to seek for options to rescue the students from abrupt truncation of their dreams to become medical doctors.”

In the bid to find a quick solution, the Osun State Government looked to Ukraine.

“In the course of looking for solutions, the National University of Kharkiv, Ukraine came into focus. By 2012, arrangements were concluded to send the students to Ukraine where they resumed their studies.”

Of the 98 stranded students, 87 travelled to Ukraine because the parents of the remaining 11 had found options for the kids.

The statement recalled that the government, had ignored criticisms from certain quarters criticising the state government's decision to send the students to Ukraine.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori, is expected to lead a delegation from the state to attend the graduation ceremony at the end of the month. (Nevermind the flight costs, hotel costs of the deputy governor and the entire delegation).
